On October 6th, 2016, Borsa İstanbul hosted Iranian companies that showed an interest in utilizing the offerings of Turkish capital markets to fund their investments and operations. The meeting which took place in Istanbul at Borsa İstanbul’s headquarters is considered as the subsequent step for increasing cooperation between Turkish and Iranian capital market entities, after the first Iran-Turkey Capital Markets Forum that was jointly organized on February 29th, 2016 in Tehran by Borsa İstanbul and Tehran Stock Exchange. The main aspect of the cooperation between the two exchanges involves dual listing of companies. Hence, this first visit from Iranian companies to Istanbul is considered as a milestone for both parties in solidifying mutually beneficial relations.
As part of the meeting agenda, Director of Marketing and Sales, Mr. Serhat Gorgun welcomed the Iranian guests and delivered a presentation providing detailed information about the key dynamics of Borsa İstanbul and Turkish capital markets in general and shared insights about the IPO process in Turkey. Following Mr. Gorgun’s welcome note and presentation, Iranian officials representing both listed and private companies from Iran delivered back to back presentations adhering key information about their companies. As part of the agenda, Iranian company representatives have also had the opportunity to direct their questions regarding the Turkish market to Turkish intermediary institution representatives present at the meeting.
The meeting ended with high remarks and enthusiasm, and participants stated that “…they were impressed by Borsa İstanbul’s prominent figures as well as the comprehensive information provided by the presentations delivered and during the discussions...” During his farewell address Mr. Gorgun said: “Turkey and Iran are close neighbors with a combined GDP of USD 1.2 trillion and very good foreign trade volume. They share a history of peace for hundreds of years. We may work together to help our economies grow and be a part of our strong linkages. There are so many potential areas of cooperation including, but not limited to; IPOs, dual listing of shares, derivatives and debt issuances including sukuks. We believe meetings like these are crucial in helping us understand each other’s stance, identify obstacles and find the corresponding solutions required to materialize the outstanding potential. We are ready to put the effort required and we look forward to seeing the results of our mutual efforts in short to mid-term.”
